Emily Cauzillo, Director of Mercantile Community Partners

Emily Cauzillo is driven by curiosity, especially when it comes to learning something new and passing it along to others. That mindset led her to the Heart of West Michigan United Way’s VITA program, where she helps prepare income taxes for individuals and families who may not otherwise have access to the resources they need.

Over the past 11 years, Emily has helped prepare nearly 8,000 tax returns for community members across Grand Rapids. The program supports low- to moderate-income households, including many single parents, where every dollar and every hour matters. This year alone, more than 700 households were served, resulting in over $1 million in tax refunds.

For Emily, the experience has been more than just volunteering—it’s a way to stay connected, broaden her perspective, and make a meaningful impact in her community.
