What does it mean to be a community banker? It means being a good neighbor, a champion for local businesses, and an advocate for the community you serve.
For 36 years, Doug Ouellette, Mercantile Bank’s Chief Community Banking Officer, has done just that, and this year we’re thrilled that he is being recognized by the CBM with a Best of Community Banking award.
From his start as a credit analyst to his current role on Mercantile’s leadership team, he has built lasting relationships with customers, colleagues, and community members. Outside the bank, Doug’s commitment continues through his support of non-profits such as Special Olympics of Michigan, his role as Chairman of the Board for McLaren Central Michigan, and his advocacy on statewide and national banking boards.
This recognition carries special meaning to Doug. His father, Thomas Ouellette, was the Chair of the CBM in 1992 and received the same award in 2010. Doug then became the Chair of the CBM in 2016, marking the first father and son to both chair the association, and receive the Best of Community Banking award.
Reflecting on the honor, Doug shared, “It means so much to represent Mercantile and carry forward my father’s legacy. Community banking has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I’m humbled to be recognized in the same way he was.”
Congratulations, Doug!
