Meet Earnie The Otter.

Our mascot Earnie is a fun-loving Michigander with a heart for community and a head for budgeting! 

Earnie the Otter is a true Michigan original! He was born and raised along the rivers that connect our state from end to end. As a freshwater otter, he’s right at home navigating Michigan’s winding waterways, cruising down a fast moving river, or Ope! slipping past a kayak. Earnie is a friendly guy and always stops to say hello on his travels.

Growing up, Earnie learned two things early: how to fish smart and how to plan ahead. Otters don’t just eat what they catch, they think about tomorrow. So Earnie became a master at managing his fish supply, carefully budgeting his meals so there was always enough for today and the days ahead. (No wasted fish. Ever.)

That natural talent followed him everywhere. While other otters were perfecting cannonballs and belly slides, Earnie was organizing his fish stash, tracking what came in and what went out, and finding better ways to store it all. Before long, friends started asking Earnie for advice and he discovered he had a knack for helping others plan, save, and feel confident about the future.

When he’s not lending a paw, Earnie is a proud Michigander through and through. You’ll often find him cheering on the Detroit Lions, Michigan’s home team, riding every high, weathering every season, and staying loyal no matter what. That same Michigan pride shows up in his ever-growing Petoskey Stone collection, which he hunts for along the shoreline whenever the water’s low and the light’s just right.

Earnie is also famous in his family for one thing: tuna casserole. It’s his signature dish, and he brings it to every family potluck without fail. It’s his favorite comfort food, and it’s always gone by the end of the party. It’s classic Michigan, just like Earnie.

Earnie believes the best things, whether it’s a thriving river ecosystem, a strong community, or a smart budget, are built with care, consistency, and a long term view. That’s why he’s such a natural fit here at Merc!
